Leaders and Helpers Training

Training for adults in Scouting changed in 2004 to the new national scheme.

The new scheme is modular and flexible, concentrating on learning rather than just attending courses. Training can be carried out using a range of methods: one to one, courses, videos, workbooks and e-learning. There are a total of 36 modules covering the skills required for all roles in Scouting.

On taking up your role, you will be allocated a Training Adviser. With them, you decide which modules are appropriate to your role in Scouting. You then agree which of these, you can demonstrate an existing ability in, and how you are going to learn the others. This forms your Personal Learning Plan. When you have completed training on one of your required modules, you simply demonstrate that you are using the skills to allow your Training Adviser to sign it off. On completion of all your modules, you will be awarded your Wood Badge. From that point, you have to complete 5 hours ongoing training each year in topics useful to your Scouting.

The Training Team in Surrey will be offering the following training courses for leaders...

To apply for any course please complete a training application form and send it with the course fee to the County Training Administrator, c/o County Office.

The above courses are assembled as a complete package to give you the opportunity to work through significant elements of training with the same group.  You may book individual days or multiples of days as identified under each course programme. You may book the Modules common to all sections (5,7,8 and 9 all on one day) on any course. Whilst any leader may attend any course, you should be aware that even for those modules that are common across the sections, there will be bias toward the section the course is designed for.

Leaders who need single modules should discuss their requirement with their Local Training Manager.

The Night Away course is designed as a learning experience to give leaders the basic training required for the Nights Away Module of the new training scheme. Following the course leaders will have to have their learning validated by their Nights Away Adviser before their DC can issue them with a Nights Away Permit

These courses are open to all leaders and adults; those with little or no experience and also those wishing to hone their skills. The course starts with simple knotting and ends with major pioneering projects and provides the skills needed to teach the Scout Pioneer Badge

This course is open to all leaders and adults. The course will cover the construction of a programme, leading campfire songs, building and lighting a campfire and much more.  There will be a fair amount of singing. The day will end with a campfire in union with the Nights Away course.

First Response – Module 10

First Response courses will be organised within each District as needs arise.  For further information on First Response courses please contact your Local Training Manager or District Commissioner.
