Spelthorne District Scouts

Spelthorne District Scouts is a scout unit in the borough of Spelthorne in north Surrey, UK, covering the towns and villages of Ashford, Charlton Village, Laleham, Shepperton, Staines, Stanwell and Sunbury. We currently have 13 scout groups in the unit, with in excess of 1000 young people meeting every week – for full details please see the Groups page(s).

Some groups (Staines & Stanwell) in the Spelthorne District were started as early as 1908 – less than a year after Lord Robert Baden Powell held the first scout camp on Brownsea Island. For more information, please visit our History page.

Our District Commissioner Roger Dix started as a cub in 1963 and became DC in July 2014, Roger writes regular articles which are to be found on this website in The DC’s Blog.

Events & Activities

All of the latest scouting news and events that are relevant to the district may be found in our News & Events section.

Our district has no campsites of its own so we regularly use the following sites elsewhere in Surrey and in nearby Berkshire & Buckinghamshire:

  • Walton Firs (Cobham, Surrey)
  • Bears Rails (Old Windsor, Berkshire)
  • Bentley Copse (Shere, near Guildford/Dorking, Surrey)
  • Paccar Scout Camp/Chalfont Heights (Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire)

Please note: Links to these sites (and many other scouting websites may be found on the Links page in our Resources section.

We are, however, very fortunate to have our own Water Activities Team. As much as 15% of Spelthorne’s land is taken up by reservoirs (for the supply of fresh water to London and the surrounding areas) – not to mention the borough has many rivers (notably the River Thames) and lakes. The team run canoe and kayak sessions at a scout group owned lake in Wraysbury, but also provide water sport activities at other venues within the district.

Inclusivity & Special Needs

Spelthorne District Scouts is fully committed to The Scout Association Vision to 2018 regarding inclusivity and special needs which states: “Groups will have more than four girls per section, that Scouting will continue to welcome disabled, LGBT, black and minority ethnic groups and Scouting will be seen as open to people from all backgrounds by the general public.”

District HQ

Our district HQ, Hengrove Scout HQ, is located in Station Crescent in Ashford and is available to groups and trainers within the district or county to host events. Full details may be found on the District HQ page in our Resources section.

The best place to buy uniforms is our local shop, Cachet Kids in Ashford, Surrey.

There are also a number of other local suppliers who can supply uniform, although the range may be limited depending on stock.

Finally, uniform (and much more) can also be purchased from ScoutShops.com, the Scout Association’s official online shop.

Full details may be found on the Shop page in our Resources section.

Spelbound is our district newsletter which is available to all members of SDS (both young people and adults) as well as being distributed to public places such as libraries and health centres etc.

Rucksack is our publication for the district’s Scout Active Support team.

Both of the above publications are currently published three times a year.

Members may download back issues of both publications via the Downloads page in our Resources section.

In addition, regular articles by our DC may be found on our DC’s Blog page.

All of the above are available via our free email subscription service

Leadership & Administration

Organising and running the district is a huge team effort. Led by our DC, Roger Dix, we have two management teams – The District Executive Committee and The District Team. Full details may be found on the Administration page.
