Spelthorne Water Activities Team
As part of the adventurous activity program the District has a team of water activity instructors available to run paddle sport activities for groups.
The Spelthorne Water Activities Team (SWAT) is made up of qualified coaches and instructors from Scouting, Girl Guiding and varying paddle sport governing bodies, the team are able to provide coaches and instructors for a variety of water based paddle sport activities including:
- Bell boating
- Dragon boating
- Kata Kanu’s
- Stand Up Paddle boarding
The team run canoe and kayak sessions at a Scout group owned lake in Wraysbury, but can also travel to other venues within the district if suitable equipment is available to run the session.
For groups wanting to include a kayaking / canoeing session in their program, SWAT can arrange a “have a go session” as an introduction to paddle sports at a cost of £5 per participant. The money from the sessions is used for replacing / updating equipment and for training instructors so SWAT can continue offering water activity sessions for the district.
For groups with previous canoeing / kayaking experience SWAT can offer more formalised coaching and sessions geared towards the participants gaining Scouting and BCU paddle sport awards.
The cost for these sessions will depend on the length of the session/s required to complete the relevant qualification.
Other activities such as river trips or other water activities can also be arranged with or via SWAT.
The District’s Water Activity Advisor, Chris Hurley, can also assist with help and advice on other water activities.
