It is claimed that his first public performance came at camp on the Isle of Wight in 1958, when he accompanied his friends singing by playing the ukulele.

It is not known if his later flamboyant dress had been inspired by the scout uniform of the time!

David is not the only old rocker to have been a member. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richard attributes his confidence, to having been a Patrol Leader during his time in the movement.
